This is what it looks like just 10 feet away in the soon-to-be living room:
TONS of light! But not in our room. It reminds me of my basement apartment in Arlington before G and I got married. Its great for sleeping but not for trying to keep a schedule and wake up on time.
In order to regain some daylight in the room we opted to try and find a skylight for our bedroom. Two weekends ago we randomly stopped in to ReStore to see if anything was new. They had several different sizes and shapes of skylights. We found one that was dome shaped that we thought would work really well but it was $90. Its still a bit pricey for us but a great deal. Then we found a smaller one for $60 that was the same basic dome. THEN we went looking through the doors and windows and lo and behold, we found these babies for $30 each:
(Note the hand crank on the bottom so we can get some fresh air in the cooler months as well) WITH THE FRAME!! We've spent some good time on our roof in the hot sun already so we are all about anything to make our trek up on the roof more efficient.
The process will be to cut the rectangle in the roof and then in our ceiling. The we just have to drywall around the space that is the crawl space in between the roof and ceiling of the room. (George makes it sound very easy though I'm sure its a day's project, at least).
We love the cave feeling in the room but I'm going for peaceful and tranquil and I think some light is necessary to achieve that. However, so that we don't lose that great cozy feeling we get from the cave, George had the idea that we paint the ceiling a dark color (since we're doing the walls in light aqua and all the accents in espresso and champagne). I wasn't crazy about it at first, but after doing some research...
